I want to comment on our discussion from last weeks class on The Fire and the Hearth... I think it was Friday when we had the in class writing assignment about the incident with Zack Edmonds and Lucas. I thought it was interesting how Zack slept with the gun under his pillow because I took an African American history course last semester and we learned a lot about master/slavery relationships. We learned how the masters began to become very afraid for their lives because their slaves were revolting against them. So what they did was slept with weapons in case their slaves came in during the night to murder them... which was very common then. I think Zack did have some fear in him towards Lucas and maybe that was why he slept with his weapon. This was one part of the story that made me think and stuck with me. I thought it was interesting.

That is an interesting fact, it makes sense. I would revolt too if this happened to me, I think at that point slaves didn't care anymore they just wanted revenge. I can only imagine how they felt, being powerless and under complete control of someone who thinks nothing of you. The beatings alone must have been terrible.

Your point is very interesting, it does make sense for the slaves to revolt, especially on large plantations where there are great quantities of slaves. Since the master is outnumbered he could and should be afraid, besides he has to know what he is doing to these people is wrong in the first place. Also this is one of the reasons they kept the slaves illiterate and wouldnt teach them anything, so they didnt know any better and didnt know how poorly they were being treated.
